1 January, 2013
Submitted: 9 December, 2014
Please describe how you have encourged your staff to stop smoking and reduced other risks in the workplace to respiratory health over the last year. There is a 2000 character limit when completing this section.
DH staff in London & Leeds offices has access to a 'Quit Club' to assist smokers to stop smoking via on site provision in the workplace during their working day without loss of pay. Trained advisers from local NHS Stop Smoking Services provide this support in dedicated areas in Quarry House for Leeds based staff and at Wellington House for those based at the 3 London sites. Sessions (which are usually held for 6 week blocks periodically) are advertised in the lifts and on special Health & well-being noticeboards. Information about the sessions can also be accessed via the staff intranet ' Delphi' on site location pages ( your building news) and through the Health & wellbeing Team whose section of the website which also provides general information on stop smoking and links to local stop smoking services for those who wish to access provision away from the workplace.
Additional promotional activity occurs around New Year and National No smoking Day in March or to coincide with other DH Smoking campaigns.
For 2014, alongside permanent secretary message encouraging staff to consider giving up smoking, we also held lunchtime session where NHS trained stop smoking advisors were invited to speak with staff and provide support to those who were considering taking part in Stoptober (campaign to encourage people to join together in stopping smoking for 28 days). We also promoted relevant website to staff www.nhs.uk/smokefree
