1 January, 2013
Submitted: 18 May, 2015
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
We run fitness classes in our Home Offices with the option of using internal reward cards as payment for these classes, and we offer subsidised gym membership at a number of gyms across the country including Fitness First, Virgin Active, David Lloyd and the Gym Scheme. These are promoted all year round on our Everyone Benefits website as well as by poster campaigns throughout the year. We promote our Cycle to Work scheme with on-site promotion events, including at stores, and we have made improvements to the showering and changing facilities in Home Offices to make it easier for people to cycle, walk or run to work or exercise during the working day.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
We are a lead parter on PHE's Change 4 Life campaign.
We promote our partnership with Sports Leaders UK in store and online.
We run Asda Active Sports Days and invite local sports providers into our stores to showcase their services to local customers.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
The results of our Asda Active Sports Days far exceeded our expectations in terms of reach. We estimate that more than 60,000 primary school children benefited from one of 400 Asda Active Sports Days that we delivered in partnership with approximately 7,000 teenage Sports Leader volunteers. Nearly 1,000 primary schools across the UK benefitted from a better quality sports day as a result of this activity, and all of the Sports Leaders involved were able to boost their CVs and UCAS applications in the process.
Our charitable Foundation, the Asda Foundation, has an ongoing strategic and delivery programme with the Active Communities Network. We currently run two programmes with bespoke, localised elements, one in Belfast and one in London, which aim to tackle poverty and social deprivation at the heart of neighbourhoods with grassroots projects, primarily through the medium of sport.
Please estimate the number of your employees who report they are regularly using active modes of travel and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
4,684 Cycle to Work scheme certificates have been issued to date.
Has the number of your employees using active modes of travel increased since last year? If unknown, please explain why:
Yes, the number of Cycle to Work scheme certificates has increased by 1890 in the last year.
If your active travel pledge activities have focused on customers or local communities, have you observed or measured any increases in active travel in these groups? If yes, please provide details and where you have been able to measure this please explain how you arrived at this estimate.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
