P4. Physical Activity in the Workplace

Committed since:

1 January, 2013

Delivery plan:

Submitted: 2 March, 2012

Carillion has already signed up to the government's cycle to work scheme to help offset the cost of cycling equipment. Walking routes from the nearest public transport stations/stops are included on many office direction sheets and we plan to include them on all. We have a monthly information service called "health matters" which aims to provide good quality information to our employees on personal health matters. We intend to regularly feature the benefits of physical activity. As part of Carillions commitment to sustainability, we encourage employees to work in support of the local community, to ensure that our business is an integrated part of the local society. Our special leave policy covers encourages physical activities, such as gardening or woodland renovation projects, as part of the working time that employees can use to support the local community. We run a "sustainability week" each year and this focuses on all aspects of sustainability including our employees health. Lunchtime walks, charity cycle challenges and runs are all regular features of the activities promoted. In our Middle East and North Africa business we held a halt for health week and activities included exercise sessions, sports tournaments and medical check-ups to create greater awareness of health issues and where to get health information and assistance. Further information on the activities carried out during our sustainability week, can be found at We plan to offer free health checks to all our employees at least once every 3 years and this will be an opportunity for discussions on fitness and the value of exercise.
