P4. Physical Activity in the Workplace

British Airways has encouraged its staff to engage in physical activity over many years.There are subsidised on site fitness centres at some of the larger locations and access to a huge range of sports, activities and facilities at The Concorde Club near Heathrow. Organised activities include most team sports, fitness classes, yoga, zumba and many different dancing disciplines. Details of all activities can be found here Many hotels used by crew have gyms and swimming pools.The British Airways Head Office at Waterside is set in 280 acres of parkland with a number of well signposted trails which staff are encouraged to use for walking and jogging. There are regular organised ranger guided walks and weekly runs. Waterside is the location for an annual charity fun run for staff and their families, which in addition to raising money for Cancer Research UK, aims to encourage participation in exercise at all levels of ability. In 2011 a special short event was successfully introduced for the under 10s.Showers and changing facilities at most locations make it easier for staff to run or cycle into work and the company is looking into participation in the cycle to work scheme.As it has done in the past, British Airways intends to be involved in various campaigns such as Walk4Life and Change4Life. Promotion of exercise has featured in various health promotion activities e.g. in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation and it is encouraged opportunistically on an individual basis during routine health surveillance and regulatory medical examinations. It is BAs intention to continue with and expand its health promotion activities and exercise will be a key feature.As an official partner of London 2012, sport is high profile in British Airways at the moment and all staff are being encourage to explore what changes they can make to their lives through the My 2012 initiative which amongst other things gives people the opportunity to test their level of skill and fitness against a number of Olympic competitors and to have a free one to one consultation with a fitness expert. This is a programme which will continue through 2012.
