Submitted: 22 April, 2015
Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
Over the past 6 months we have been all eyes and ears in trying to deliver what the customer wants from the community café at East Riding Community Hospital as well as trying to encourage the customers to make healthier choices where possible, our daily meal deals are all prepared in the hospitals main kitchen and the cooks prepare most of these dishes from scratch using fresh ingredients where possible , linking in with healthy meals we serve to the patients, staff and visitors offers low salt and low fat but with all the goodness. We have found by having a hot choice meal for our meal deal each day encourages everyone to have the healthy option.
Other foods we have introduced are fresh fruit pots, energy cereal bars, salad bowls, different types of breads including wholemeal, seeded and wraps, offering an option of a side salad with meals as well as adding to the sandwich fillings, Low fat crisps, different flavoured waters, offering light flora as well as butter when having toast, a toasted teacake, crumpets or a freshly baked scone.
Jacket potatoes are also one of our healthy options on offer each day with a variety of fillings that we change on a regular basis, homemade soups using fresh ingredients are often sold out very quickly too without any added creams, fats or salt.
We have just completed a survey within the café asking the customers which products they would like to see being sold in the café, gluten free and more breakfast items are just two of the items mentioned to us so we are looking into this.
Further choice will be offered in relation to portion size, calorie count etc.
