A4. Tackling Under-Age Alcohol Sales
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 9 June, 2015
Please describe your work to reduce and prevent under-age sales of alcohol, over the last year (2000 characters limit):
Since 2009, we have committed to Challenge 25, requiring proof of age from all under-25s buying alcohol, including any customer who looks under 25. We provide training for all employees working in our food stores to improve their understanding of Challenge 25. We refresh this training twice a year.
All checkouts have till prompts. If this age is under 25 then the till will not allow the transaction to continue until appropriate ID has been checked and the customer has shown they are over 18. Reports showing the number of challenges and refusals each checkout operator is making, are checked weekly by store management, to ensure that all staff are operating the 'Challenge 25' policy correctly. 'Challenge 25' information is made available in all stores selling alcohol. These materials may include: posters, shelf barkers, badges for staff and information on customer facing till screens. We also use our internal communications channels to raise awareness of and understanding about 'Challenge 25' amongst the 9,000 employees of Central England Co-operative.
