Through its global Kinder + Sport initiative, Ferrero has committed to encouraging young people to be physically active, to enjoy a moderate and balanced diet and to lead a healthy lifestyle. As part of this initiative in the UK, we have collaborated with Watford Football Club Community Sports and Education Trust to develop and deliver a combined physical activity and nutritional education programme – the Bringing Education and Sport Together (BEST) Project – in our local community.
The BEST Project is an imaginative and flexible schools-based programme which aims to educate both pupils and parents about nutrition and the importance of following a healthy, active lifestyle, along with ideas and encouragement for how to do it. The educational programme is aligned to the national curriculum for Year five pupils (nine and ten year olds) and will reach one thousand eight hundred children and their families across thirty schools in the Watford area by the end of the 2013/14 academic year.
Delivered by enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff from the Watford Football Club Community Sports and Education Trust, the six week programme covers six nutritional topics and allows children to try three different sports: football, handball and dodgeball. In the classroom sessions, students participate in interactive handset-based activities which ensure high levels of engagement with the topics. Following each session, students are provided with information cards outlining the key outtakes from the classroom and sport sessions to take home. These include suggested exercises and challenges, and point students in the right direction to find out information about local sports clubs they can join.
