Crossrail continue to quantify and reduce health risks with a focus on the following:
- Fatigue. Risk assessment and plans are in place. Research continues to measure the health effects of fatigue and a report is due later in 2015
- Air quality. Research on dust and DEEE in tunnelling has concluded and findings will be presentated at the IOHA conference and in a scientific publication. Crossrail are also developing an industry good practice guide on air quality in tunnelling and are a poster orgainsation for the IOSH 'No time to lose' campaign.
- Mental health. Crossrail support the Time to Change Campaign and promoted the Time to Talk Day. We continue to develop our mental health programme to ensure it meets the varying needs of our workforce. We are developing a series of workshops and toolbox talks on common mental health conditions, energy and resilience. We also provide access to occupational health and the employee assistance programme. .
We require our contractor organisations and their supply chain to engage with OH providers who are SEQOHS accredited. They are also required to deliver a monthly wellbeing programme and focussed campaigns on common health conditional, lifestyle and occupational risk. This year they have delivered a range of toolbox talks and campaign for example on; cancer, coronary heart disease, sun awareness, back care, fatigue and mental health. Mini health checks or lifestyle screening is offered to all employees. All OH service providers conduct pre-placement health assessment and periodic health surveillance, based on exposure to occupational hazards. Managers are provided with information on employee heath to ensure ongoing protection and health management.
In a safety critical environment it is also important to manage the effects of drugs and alcohol through a testing programme and support arrangement for those who have declared a problem.
In 2015 we plan to conduct a health and wellbeing survey to target our interventions.
