Submitted: 4 January, 2013

Following sign up to the Better Health at Work (Bronze Award) the group has confirmed its commitment to actively promote the health, safety and wellbeing of group staff. Throughout the year health and wellbeing of group staff will be closely monitored via Better Health at Work initiatives and quarterly stats supplied by HR. Based on needs identified HR/Occupational Health will work closely with staff concerned to make the relevant aid/adaptation to support individuals with carrying out their job role. Bernicia uses a bespoke HR system to capture and monitor sickness absence. Full sickness details, including dates/reasons/certification, are recorded by the manager and approved by the HR team; once approved payment rates are calculated in line with the Group terms and conditions.Payment is based on length of service up to a maximum six months full pay and six months half pay for staff with more than five years service.Monthly absence reports are provided to managers to assist with monitoring sickness absence. In addition, processes have been put in place such as return to work interviews, exit interviews, occupational health for the purpose of referrals or aid and adaptations.Information regarding staff health wellbeing will initially be featured internally via the group Bernicia Bulletin and will continue to be reported to the Bernicia Board on a quarterly basis. Consideration will be given to include a section relating to health and wellbeing in the group annual report. Through the Better Health At Work award initiative the group will keep all lines of communication open with staff to obtain as much feedback as possible on how to continuously improve its approach to health, safety and wellbeing of staff. To support this commitment Bernicia Group will be working towards the Better Health at Work Silver Award.
