Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers
S2. Promoting the Responsibility Deal

The ALMR has consistently promoted the Responsibility Deal to retailer and supplier members since the establishment of the Deal and continues to do so. We encourage members to sign as many pledges as they feel they can deliver but have specifically focused on the alcohol and food pledges and particularly on A2, A4, A7(a), A8(a), F5(a), (b), (c) and F9. We have written to members informing them of the positive aspects of engagement and have explicitly advertised the Deal itself as demonstrating the benefits of working in partnership with government. We have also promoted the commercial benefits to businesses of visible and high-profile engagement on public health matters, particularly regarding children’s meals and many of our members have taken this firmly to heart, as demonstrated by the significant reductions in salt in high street chain pubs’ children’s meals found in the 2014 edition of Consensus Action on Salt and Health’s annual survey.
Over the coming year we will continue to promote the Responsibility Deal through meetings and engagement with our members, particularly at our high-level Food and Licensing Working Groups which are attended by representatives from all of our largest and most influential members. Our governing Board and Council are fully supportive of the Responsibility Deal generally and the Association’s promotion of it; and the Deal itself forms an integral part of our strategy to work with government and achieve positive outcomes without costly legislation. We will continue to promote to our members the commercial and political benefits of the Responsibility Deal; and believe that even greater numbers of our members will be encouraged to sign up as a result of both likely stable government support for the Deal over this Parliament and the improving commercial situation.
