Improvement Scheme

Part of our programme of improvements (generally with value <£10m)

Cost:  £2.3 million

Managed by:   Area 3

Where was the project located?

M27 junction 3 is located near Southampton in Hampshire and intersects with the M271, one of the main routes to the city and Southampton Docks.

Why was the scheme needed?

The M27 junction 3 slip roads and M271 were operating above capacity, resulting in long queues during weekday peak periods.

As part of the Government's Pinch Point Programme it was decided to increase the capacity of the junction to improve safety and traffic flows at this location.

What work was carried out?

Work included:

  • widening the M27 westbound exit slip-road to 3 lanes
  • widening the M271 northbound and southbound approaches to three lanes
  • removing the eastern overbridge hard shoulder to allow a third traffic lane
  • the installation of additional traffic signals

How did this benefit road users?

The increased capacity on the approach roads and roundabout has improved journey times across the junction.
