Part of our ongoing programme of work to maintain England's strategic road network

Cost:  £14 million

Managed by:   Area 3

-

Where was the project located?

The works were carried out along the M4 between junction 13 (Chieveley exit for the A34) and junction 14 (Hungerford exit for the A338), in West Berkshire. Work started in February and was completed in early October 2015.

Why was the scheme needed?

Past inspections had found a number of defects with the bridge structures at the Chieveley Interchange and Welford Viaduct which needed to be addressed to ensure the Highways England network remains in a safe and serviceable condition.

What work was carried out?

Welford Viaduct: replacement of the bespoke expansion joint and waterproofing material, and resurfacing of the carriageway.

Chieveley Interchange: replacement of the beams in the central reserve area and waterproofing material, concrete repairs and resurfacing of the carriageway.

How did this benefit road users?

The completed works will ensure safety of road users and the long term integrity of the structures.
