What was the proposal?

We proposed to increase the capacity of the M62 between junctions 18 and 20 by making it a "managed motorway".

Managed motorways help relieve congestion by using technology to vary speed limits. They also allow the hard shoulder to be used as a running lane at peak times to create additional capacity. They deliver these benefits at a significantly lower cost than conventional motorway widening and with less impact on the environment during construction.

We proposed to implement hard shoulder running over the 5 miles during times of peak congestion with a reduced speed limit for the entire stretch of the M62 between Junctions 18 and 20. The proposals included lengths of narrow lanes to avoid expensive structural works and land take.

Why was the scheme [cancelled/withdrawn]?

This scheme, along with M60 Junction 8 to 12 Managed Motorway and M60 Junctions 15-12 Lane Gain was one of three schemes originally announced as part of the 2010 spending review.

These individual schemes have now been combined into one scheme, M60 Junction 8 to M62 Junction 20 Manchester Managed Motorways.
