Improvement Scheme

Part of our programme of improvements (generally with value <£10m)

Cost:  £7 million

Managed by:   Area 13

Where was the project located?

The scheme was at M6 junction 32 north of Preston.  The junction forms a junction with the M55 to Blackpool.

Why was the scheme needed?

The northbound M6 suffers from safety problems and congestion related to the current layout as vehicles change lanes to either continue along the M6 or turn onto the M55.

What work was carried out?

The mainline M6 was widened to provide three lanes northbound through the junction.  The existing two lane exit to the M55 were retained in a realigned layout and the northbound entry slip from the M55 onto the M6 has been amended north of the junction.  A new overhead sign gantry has been erected and works took place to the central reservation and other elements of the junction.

How did this benefit road users?

The travelling public benefit from reduced daily congestion, reduce journey times, a boost to the economy and improve safety.
