Improvement Scheme

Part of our programme of improvements (generally with value <£10m)

Cost:  £5.3 million

Managed by:   Area 10

Where was the project located?

The first phase of the works was on both M60 junction 24 southbound and northbound exit slip roads.  The second phase of the works was on M67/A57 approach to the junction and the roundabout.

Why was the scheme needed?

The scheme was needed as the M60 junction 24 had extensive queuing on all approaches in peak periods and is a particularly problem on the M67 westbound approach.  This resulted in delays with traffic backing up on the slips roads and forming lengthy queues.  This scheme will increase the capacity of the junction as a whole, thus eliminating the delays and improving journey times.

What work was carried out?

Works included:

- Construction of dedicated left turn lane with a give way from M60 on to the A57 westbound and free flow lane from A57/M67 exit slip road to M60.

- New traffic signals, including a sign gantry, on A57/M67 westbound approach to the roundabout.

- Widening of M60 southbound off slip to allow extra lane capacity for vehicles on the exit slip road.

- Installation of new LED street lighting on the approaches to and the roundabout.

- Resurfacing and change of road markings on the roundabout.

- New signage to provide additional information for motorists to provide clarity and help smooth traffic flows.

How did this benefit road users?

As part of the Pinch Point Programme, this scheme aims to:

- Help to reduce daily congestion.

- Reduce journey times for the travelling public.

- Boost the economy.

- Improve safety.
