Improvement Scheme

Part of our programme of improvements (generally with value <£10m)

Cost:  £1 million

Managed by:   Area 10

Where was the project located?

The works were in the vicinity of the M56/M53 interchange between Ellesmere Port and Chester.

Why was the scheme needed?

The A55 suffers significant congestion, but there is a choice of routes around Chester and into North Wales. Currently there is no information on which is the quickest route. This scheme will provide information to drivers who can then make more informed route choices, with the potential to avoid congestion and improve journey times.

What work was carried out?

Works involved the installation of variable message signs on the southbound M53 prior to M56 interchange and at the westbound end of M56, prior to M53 interchange.

How did this benefit road users?

As part of the Pinch Point Programme, this scheme aims to help to reduce daily congestion, reduce journey times for the travelling public and boost the economy.
