Bulletin 2011/06: Revising urban area boundaries and the rural-urban definition/classification following the 2011 Census

Bulletin 2011/06

Bulletin released 26/10/11

Category: Geographic Products

The existing rural-urban definition (for small areas) and classification (higher level geographies) were created following the 2001 Census. However, changes to land use and the built environment over the last ten years mean that the urban area boundaries which underpin the definition/classification are becoming out of date. Therefore a joint project1 has been looking at how the products might be updated following the 2011 Census to ensure that they remain relevant and fit for purpose.

The project has identified a preferred approach and is now keen to get user feedback. A survey has been launched and will run until 25 November 2011. Please note, before completing the survey users will need to have read the document which accompanies it, User engagement document (located at the bottom of the linked webpage). The document explains in more detail the need to update the products, describes the various methodological options, and identifies the preferred approach.
