Plan for the acceleration of NUTS2 and NUTS3 Regional Gross Value Added (GVA) estimates

Following a recommendation by the European Commission (Eurostat) Working Group on National Accounts, Eurostat requested an acceleration of the delivery of total Gross Value Added (GVA) estimates by EU Member States. This was in response to regular requests from users.

Eurostat GVA data are currently released more than two years after the end of the reference period however the production of data at national level across Member States has generally accelerated since the European System of Accounts 1995 was implemented.

The European System of Accounts 2010 data transmission programme, which will take effect in 2014, includes the requirement for Member States to provide GVA data on a more timely basis.

ONS Regional Accounts has agreed to deliver estimates of total GVA at the NUTS2 sub-region level for t-12 months (where t is the year of publication). A change in the availability of a key data source has made acceleration possible.

The deadline for meeting this EU requirement is December 2014, but domestic estimates will be published as soon as the necessary system changes can be implemented and the results quality assured.
