Release date announced for Census Area Statistics

Census Area Statistics (CAS) will become available for areas throughout England and Wales from 28 August 2003. The CAS provide the most detailed local results from the Census, and will be the largest set ever released concurrently from the Census.

The production of CAS - some 150 tables with some 15,000 counts in total for some 185,000 areas - is progressing well, but the release date was rescheduled from July to August to reflect the actual capacity of the output production system as a whole, including the checking of output, once it was operating with large volumes of data.

The CAS at all levels will be available in SuperTABLE and CSV formats on DVDs for England and Wales as a whole, and will be supplied to meet existing and new orders. Users who have arranged supply of 2001 Census material through an intermediaries service such as SASPAC need not order directly from ONS, and supply to intermediaries will have high priority.

Census Customer Services will contact all those who have made orders for CAS to confirm precise requirements. It is likely that there will be more than one or two standard versions, and that not all supply will be completed on 28 August, but every effort will be made to despatch orders for a particular version at the same time.

Where possible releases are made simultaneously on National Statistics Online and in other media. Means of placing CAS, and Standard Tables, in Neighbourhood Statistics on the site are being evaluated. More announcements will be made.

There is no charge for the DVDs or for access to material on Neighbourhood Statistics. The costs of production have been met through the Census Access project with funding assistance from the project partners - the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Department of Health, the National Assembly for Wales, the Local Government Association, and the Economic and Social Research Council.
