Key Statistics for the Rural and Urban Classification 2004

The Key Statistics for the urban and rural classification 2004 contains data for England and Wales, England, Wales, and each county and Unitary Authority in England, and each Unitary Authority in Wales.

They supplement the information in the Key Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales and the Key Statistics for settlements in England and Wales each of which provides results for specific named urban areas.

The Key Statistics based on the definition of the rural and urban classification 2004 provide results for categories of rural and urban populations within each administrative area, in particular for use with other information defined on the same basis. An introductory guide to the new definition and classification is available as a PDF file.


The Key Statistics tables

The Key Statistics dataset consists of a series of 33 tables which provide a summary of the complete results of the Census. They are designed to enable easy comparison between areas across the full range of Census variables.

Product notes

  • Table 'KS01 Usual resident population does not include 1991 population figures, which were not available when the tables were produced.

  • Table 'KS24 Migration' was not produced for the rural and urban classification 2004, so is not included on the CD or in the downloadbale datasets.
