In this release

This release contains Local Characteristics tables relating to a range of topics including health and housing, cross-tabulated with one or more topics from the census. The tables are provided for Output Areas (OAs) in England and Wales, which provides the greatest level of detail possible for all local areas, as the OA is the lowest level of geography for which census estimates are produced.

There are 10 Local Characteristics tables in this release, which are available from the Nomis website. Each table can be accessed directly using the links in the reference table (36.5 Kb Excel sheet) .

In addition, the release also includes:

  • 6 Detailed Characteristics tables on a range of topics including health and housing

  • 1 Quick Statistics table on method of travel to work

  • 1 Workplace Population table on location of usual residence and method of travel to work

Due to the level of detail included in Local Characteristics tables, and the lower level of geography, in order to prevent disclosure of individuals' information some classifications have been collapsed. Comparability with Detailed Characteristics tables has been retained as far as possible.

More information about Output Areas and other geographic areas is available from ONS Geography.

Tables from previous releases are also available from the Nomis website.

Further information about the census estimates, including details about the methodology used and information about how other population sub-groups are counted and defined, is available in the 2011 Census user guide.

Further information on the fitness for purpose of the statistics in this release can be found in the Quality and Methodology Information (179.3 Kb Pdf) paper.
