  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 27/12/2013 (week 52) was 6,606. This represents a decrease of 3,729 deaths registered in comparison with the previous week (week 51).

  • The average number of deaths for the corresponding week over the previous five years was 8,687.

  • Moveable public holidays, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published weeks and in the corresponding weeks in previous years.

  • The decrease in the deaths registered in the week ending 27/12/2013 is likely to be due to the closure of register offices over the Christmas holiday period. The decrease may also be partly due to adverse weather conditions across much of England and Wales, which could have prevented relatives travelling to register offices.

  • There are the same values in weeks 45 and 46 for males under 1 year, and weeks 48 and 49 for persons aged 01-14. However these counts are made up of unique death registrations.

In this release

Weekly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the latest eight weeks for which data are available. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.

In January 2014, ONS will change the software used to code cause of death. Further information about the implementation of the software can be found on the ONS website.

The Vital Statistics: Population and Health Reference Tables provide quarterly and annual mortality data for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries. Monthly Figures on Deaths Registered by Area of Usual Residence provide provisional monthly mortality data for England and Wales.

There is also an interactive mapping tool which enables trends in mortality to be analysed at the local level. Mortality rates for 2002-2010 in this tool need to be recalculated using revised population estimates which take account of the 2011 Census. The tool will be updated once decisions are made about implementing changes to the European Standard Population in the UK.

For mortality data for other UK countries please see statistics on deaths in Scotland and statistics on deaths in Northern Ireland.
