  • Moveable public holidays, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published weeks and in the corresponding weeks in previous years.

  • There are the same values in weeks 30 and 31 for males under 1 year, weeks 29 and 30 for males aged 1-14, weeks 25 and 26 for females under 1 year and in weeks 24 and 25 for males aged 15-44. For both the West Midlands and the East 898 deaths were registered in week 27. However these counts are made up of unique death registrations.

Weekly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the latest eight weeks for which data are available. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.

For information on data quality, legislation and procedures relating to mortality statistics, please see Mortality metadata (2.46 Mb Pdf) and Mortality Quality and Methodology Information report (222.3 Kb Pdf) .

In January 2014, ONS changed the software used to code cause of death. Further information about the implementation of the software can be found on the ONS website.

The Vital Statistics: Population and Health Reference Tables provide annual mortality data for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries. Monthly Figures on Deaths Registered by Area of Usual Residence provide provisional monthly mortality data for England and Wales.

There is also an interactive mapping tool which enables trends in mortality to be analysed at the local level. Mortality rates for 2001 onwards have been calculated using the 2013 European Standard Population (ESP) and revised population estimates for 2002-2010 which take account of the 2011 Census. The tool will be updated in December 2014 / January 2015 with rates for the latest data year.

For mortality data for other UK countries please see statistics on deaths in Scotland and statistics on deaths in Northern Ireland.
