  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in August 2013 was 35,692. This represents a decrease of 4,118 deaths in comparison with the previous month and a decrease of 3,343 deaths in comparison to the same month in 2012.

  • The decrease in the provisional number of deaths registered in August is likely to be the result of a lower number of days when register offices were open during the month in comparison to July 2013 and August 2012.

  • Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years.

In this release

Monthly death figures provide counts of the number of deaths registered by area of usual residence for England and Wales. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.

Before September 2012, tables were published monthly as Monthly provisional figures on deaths registered by area of usual residence, England and Wales. The data years available include June 2011 - August 2012.

For information on data quality, legislation and procedures relating to mortality statistics, please see Mortality metadata (2.46 Mb Pdf)  and Mortality Quality and Methodology Information report (222.3 Kb Pdf) .

The Vital Statistics: Population and Health Reference Tables provide quarterly and annual mortality data for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries. Weekly provisional deaths registered in England and Wales provide provisional weekly data on deaths registered in England and Wales.

There is also an interactive mapping tool which enables trends in mortality to be analysed at the local level. Mortality rates for 2002-2010 in this tool need to be recalculated using revised population estimates which take account of the 2011 Census. The tool will be updated once decisions are made about implementing changes to the European Standard Population in the UK.

For mortality data for other UK countries please see statistics on deaths in Scotland and statistics on deaths in Northern Ireland.
