Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP)

We are here to help NHS England organisations deliver QIPP. On 12 July 2010, the White Paper ‘Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS’ set out the government’s vision for the future of the NHS. The White Paper outlines the government’s commitment to ensuring that QIPP supports the NHS to make efficiency savings, which can be reinvested back into the service to continually improve quality of care.

The QIPP process is a home for this in the NHS and the way that we can implement the best and brightest ideas across the service. As the Prime Minister said: ‘Don’t hold back – be innovative, be radical, challenge the way things are done.”

Twelve national QIPP workstreams

NHS organisations at regional and local level have QIPP plans in place to address the quality and productivity challenge. Supporting these are twelve national workstreams designed to help NHS staff successfully deliver these changes. 

Five workstreams relate to commissioning of care and five relate to the running and staffing of NHS organisations. Two focus on primary care commissioning and contracting, and digital technology. Each workstream will be led by an experienced NHS workstream lead.

“We need to fashion a vibrant, creative NHS that really fizzes with ideas of how to improve quality and how to reduce costs........ So, instead of relying on ever more funds flowing from the Treasury, we must look to ourselves to make savings. This practical imperative is what QIPP is all about......... We have the resources, we have the knowledge and we have the ability to give the people of this country a truly first class NHS and to deliver it within our means.”
