Digital R&D podcasts

A series of six audio podcast magazine programmes, released monthly, exploring the innovative use of digital technology in the arts and cultural sector. 

The series, hosted by arts and culture broadcaster and journalist John Wilson, launched on 16 July 2012 and will be available for download monthly from the Arts Council's iTunes and SoundCloud channels. 

The podcasts feature discussion and debate from expert studio guests and pioneering case study examples of digital projects from the arts and cultural sectors.

Each programme in the series will focus on one of the themes at the core of the new Digital R&D Fund for the Arts: User generated content and social media; Digital distribution and exhibition; Mobile, location and games; Data and archives; Buisness models; and Education and learning.

Interviews include US crowdfunding site Kickstarter which has recently launched in the UK, the BFI which talks about digital and its plans to launch the BFIPlayer, and Digital Theatre whose high quality British theatre productions are available to an international audience via an online platform and Samsung SmartTV partnership.

Peter Tullin, Co-founder of innovative online shop Culture Label, Simon Tanner, Director of Digital Consultancy Services at Kings College London and digital, arts and technology journalist Patrick Hussey join John in the studio, debating all of the above as well as changing royalty distribution models and working in partnership.

Podcast 5 focuses on how organisations can use digital technologies for arts and cultural education and learning, not only for children and young people but also for those outside of the formal education system.

Dave Patten, Head of New Media, Science Museum; Max Whitby, Co-Founder and CEO of Touchpress; and Kirsten Campbell-Howes, Director of Learning, at digital agency Soda join John in the studio to debate hot topics including: whether technology can and should replace teachers and the traditional structures of learning, how BYOD (bringing your own device) could see smartphones being used to aid - rather than distract from - learning in the classroom and museum environments, and the educational benefits of games.

Plus hear about a Jodi award-wining digital project from the National Trust to make their historic properties accessible to all, online resources from the British Library that open up possibilities for lifelong learning, and follow Tate Kids down the rabbit hole as they demonstrate their Wondermindgame.

Joining John in the studio are Bill Thompson, Head of Partnership Development, BBC Archives; Drew Hemment, Founder and CEO of Future Everything; and Dr Paul Gerhardt, Director of Archives for Creativity. They discuss what arts organisations need to consider when digitising their archives as we hear from bespoke archive Siobhan Davis Replay alongside commercial giants Google, who have partnered with arts organisations in the Google Art Project.

The V&A and Public Catalogue Foundation also tell us how involving the public in tagging your digital archive can create new ways of experiencing a collection; our guests discuss how organisations can use their data innovatively and creatively, opening it up to the public and even developers; and we get technical as we hear from the British Museum who are working alongside other cultural institutions to revolutionise the way we search collections data through the web.

Studio guests include: Hasan Bakshi, Director, creative industries in Nesta's Policy and Research Unit, Paul Bennun, Chair of Artangel and co-owner of Somethin' Else Productions and Joanna Ellis from The Literary Platform. They dissect the opportunities and issues involved in sharing content digitally such as licensing and copyright, strategic partnerships with the likes of YouTube and SkyArts, the new dawn of social literature projects in China and the risks around cannibalising ticket sales with live streams (listen out for some heated debate around this area!)

Studio guests include: Jo Reid, Creative Director at Calvium (creators of app building software, AppFurnace), Martha Henson, Multimedia Producer, at the Wellcome Trust, and Sergio Falletti, Director at mobile solutions agency Future Platforms. In this podcast they dissect the future of mobile from near field communication (NFC) technology to Google's Project Glass and take in the latest advances in augmented reality along the way. But how much of this technology can really deliver what we need it to for our audiences?

There are also case studies from Nancy Proctor, Head of Mobile Strategy and Initiatives at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, Peter Higgin, Punchdrunk's Enrichment Director and Tod Machover from the famous MIT Media Lab in Boston on their sold out transatlantic theatre project Sleep No More and Paul Cutts, Chief Executive of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group on their Dickens App for iPhone.
