Course Data Stage 2 North Lindsey College
North Lindsey College will re-develop its existing Course Planning System to meet the project objective of generating XCRI-CAP data feeds from a maintainable course data source. It will also re-develop its website to receive this course data utilising the same XCRI-CAP data feed and to receive other information (eg: KIS, aggregated HEAR data) for prospective learners. The college will apply these system improvements to both HE and FE courses so that the good practice engendered by this project is extended into the FE sector.
The college provides information on its HE and FE courses to prospective learners via its own website and via several external course directories; Lincs2 (for schools in North/NE Lincolnshire) and Skills Funding Agency Next Step (for adults). The process of defining, collating, distributing and maintaining this information is time consuming and difficult. The HE courses offered include Foundation degrees and HND/HNCs, available full-time and part-time, which are considered difficult to find.
The college’s Course Planning System enables detailed planning of courses but needs extending to include course marketing information. It will be re-designed to meet the project requirements. This project is only of significant benefit to the college if it includes both HE and FE course data since HE courses represent 12% and 7% of full-time and part-time courses respectively at the college. Therefore, FE course data will also be available via the XCRI-CAP feed and this could help drive similar developments with FE sector course data collectors.
The college’s website is primarily for providing information about courses and so needs to show the same information as other course advertisers. Therefore, this will also be re-designed to enable it to receive its course data from the same XCRI-CAP feed and the extra information required, including KIS and HEAR. Re-designing the hosted website to receive an XCRI-CAP feed could provide useful experience for dissemination to the wider HE and FE community.
At the completion of this project, the college will have systems that enable it to plan, cost, authorise, maintain and promote its courses, both HE and FE, in an efficient and timely manner.
The primary aim of this project is to enable the college to revise its course planning process to ensure that it can provide maintainable XCRI-CAP data feeds for HE course information to course data collectors, including its own website. As a secondary aim, after the primary aim has been achieved, it will extend to FE course data since the processes and data involved are almost identical and the return to the college for HE course data only is insufficient to justify the work involved.
