Course Data Stage 2 London School of Economics and Political Science

The LSE approach will be to implement a system that will facilitate the xcri-cap feed for some courses that fall within the remit of the JISC programme scope, but in a manner that will enable easier adoption by other course provision at a later date – an extendable implementation.

The focus of the project will be to provide a xcri-cap feed of:

  1. Summer School courses
  2. Selected postgraduate courses (‘e-MSc’ programmes as a minimum), and
  3. Widening Participation courses

The choice of these three is deliberate, as they cover the 3 board categories of ‘systems’ currently in place for capturing and publishing ‘course’ information at LSE, namely:

  1. Core data held within SITS as ‘modules’
  2. Core data held within SITS as ‘courses’
  3. Core data handled in a bespoke ‘system’ in a manner similar to ‘events’

Most importantly, these three areas allow the institution to focus on improving systems that have the most gain for LSE and its stakeholders, and therefore the greatest motivation for ensuring success of the project. In particular, improving processes, systems and data quality in an area we know is problematic and causing inconsistency of data amidst inefficient processes. 

This is where the JISC programme overlaps with a project that the School has been struggling to commence – a project to replace our existing Teaching Quality Assurance and Review Office (TQARO) ‘Calendar’ system which currently publishes module information to the web and interacts with the published programme regulations.  These two elements combined provide the core information supplied to the prospectus team for publishing additional course marketing material, and other stakeholders and systems.

The outcome of this project will hopefully be to make information more readily available and searchable by our customers, and allow the institution to take advantage of future technologies in this area.  Additionally the course provision selected also link into other national initiatives, namely the HEAR and KIS; and our OFFA commitments to Widening Participation.  For our response to the HEAR initiative this project approach should enable us to re-use and/or re-purpose the content for programmes, modules and additional courses/activity undertaken by our students. 

Objectives

  • Improved data quality of course and programme information as evidenced by repeating a data quality exercise;
  • Rationalisation of systems involved in the current process for publishing course content;
  • Decommissioning of the current TQARO Calendar system;
  • Reduction in administration and risk by a more streamlined, efficient and auditable process;
  • Production of a COOL URL feed from structured content for the ‘courses’ within the scope of the project.

Anticipated Outputs and Outcomes

  • Internal process - improved efficiency over current out dated process
  • Improved data quality - by rationalising the sources of data, and streamlining process
  • Customer access to information - via XCRI-CAP feed via a COOL URL and database driven website content
  • Management Information - more reliable MI through improved data quality assurance as a consequence of structured definitive data sources
  • Technical developments/ innovations – benefit from and contribute to developments in the use of content structured and published to the xcri-cap standard.
  • Project Website, project plan, six-monthly interim reports, a final report and a completion report.
