EQual programme updates

The EQual (Ensuring Quality of waste-derived products to achieve resource efficiency) programme runs for three and half years, from September 2011 to March 2015.

Autumn 2013

Quality Protocol Checker tool

The Quality Protocol Checker tool is available for user testing. Please try it out and send us your feedback:

Definition of waste web tool

There is considerable activity on several aspects of the tool development. Security accreditation is in progress, and further user acceptance testing is being undertaken. We have started to develop the technical guidance and support material for the tool.

Programme board

The EQual programme board meeting is on 12 November 2013 in London.

Summer 2013

QP Checker web tool

Internal trials of the prototype QP checker are now complete, and feedback is being reviewed for input to the tool. We will commence external pilot trials with some selected businesses and other interested stakeholders during August 2013, before extending the external pilot trials to a wider audience.

We are in the later stages of technical testing of the tool. We are completing further work on the content so the tool can be ready for the start of pilot trials in the Autumn of 2013.

Field trials

We are carrying out field trials to assess the environmental and human health risks of four waste-derived materials: poultry litter ash (PLA) and paper sludge applied to arable soils; pulverised fuel ash (PFA) and incinerator bottom ash aggregate (IBAA) used as secondary aggregates in construction. All the trials are in progress. Monitoring will continue until late 2014, followed by analysis, with results available in Spring 2015.

Programme board

We held our EQual extended programme board on Tuesday 16 July 2013 in London. Our Extended Board members are happy with Equal’s progress to date.

March 2013

QP checker web tool

Internal user pilots underway.

Definition of waste web tool

The web tool development is well underway and we are on course for piloting the tool in the Netherlands, England and Wales in the Autumn.  We are also running an event in April 2013 in Utrecht for some European regulators around approaches to end of waste, where we will showcase the web tool.

Programme board

The EQual programme board meeting was on 21 May 2013 in London.

February 2013

QP checker web tool

The web tool prototype was completed in December. We have commenced internal user pilots with the first group of stakeholders.

Definition of waste web tool

We have awarded the contract to SCISYS. Development of the draft prototype of the web tool is underway, and we aim to have a working tool ready for user testing by the end of September 2013.

Field trials

We are carrying out field trials to assess the environmental and human health risks of four waste-derived materials. The trials assessing poultry litter ash (PLA) and paper sludge applied to arable soils are under way; this work is being carried out by ADAS.

Field trials to assess the risks of IBAA use as a secondary aggregate in construction will begin in March; with trials on the use of pulverised fuel ash (PFA) as a secondary aggregate expected to be implemented in April. Results of the field trials will be available in Spring 2015.

Programme board

The EQual programme board meeting was on 19 March 2013 in London.
