The Schools White Paper The Importance of Teaching describes a long term programme of work to reduce burdens and give schools greater freedom to decide how they fulfil their functions. These pages describe the action taken to date to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy in schools.

The Government has taken steps to reduce burdens in a number of areas, including:

  • inspection and self-evaluation
  • lesson planning
  • Assessing Pupils Progress (APP)
  • financial management
  • qualifications
  • removal of statutory requirements on schools
  • reviewing data burdens
  • cutting guidance and improving communications to schools.

A detailed description of the measures taken in each of these areas can be found by clicking on the links to the left.

The Government is committed to engaging with front-line professionals to ensure our proposals have a real and meaningful impact on reducing bureaucracy for schools.

As part of this commitment, we have two separate teacher reference groups for primary and secondary heads and the Bureaucracy Reference Group comprising teachers, school business managers and heads. The role of this Group is to advise the Department on how existing bureaucracy can be reduced and to help prevent the creation of additional burdens by advising on the likely impact of new policies and procedures.

If you would like to give your views or feedback on further steps that could be taken to reduce burdens, please email us.
