4 Responses to Pathfinder clinical commissioning groups by Strategic Health Authority clusters

  1. Professor Colin Harbury says:

I am concerned to know what patient involvement will be.

    • Jennie Fergusson, Department of Health says:

      Thank you for your query.

One of the principal aims of GP commissioning is to make decisions about services that are more responsive to the needs and wishes of patients and the public. Good communication and engagement with the public will be vital to the commissioning process.

The Department has begun work with a number of emerging GP consortia who wish to develop their approaches to engagement and harness the benefits of public voice in their commissioning. We are working alongside the BMA, RCGP, NAPC, NHS Alliance, Family Doctor Association and patient representative organisations to promote the benefits of good engagement and to capture and share learning with pathfinders and the wider GP community.
We will also promote close working between emerging GP consortia and PCTs to help ensure that, during the transitional period, consortia are able to draw on the expertise and experience of PCT staff and the repository of information about public views held at PCT or borough level. Another way that consortia will be supported in doing this in the future would be through engagement with their local HealthWatch organisations and patient representative groups.

  2. Barbara Thompson says:

I found the list of GP consortia but would have liked to link to an explanation of the geographical area. I live in North Cheshire and Merseyside and could find no reference for our large catchment area?

    • Jennie Fergusson, Department of Health says:

The geographical areas are the areas that the consortia have described themselves as covering. These Pathfinders are the first few to be announced, and at the moment not every area of the country is in the catchment area for a GP Pathfinder consortium. However, more consortia will be joining the programme on an ongoing basis, and the updated information will be available from this site. Ultimately all areas of England will be covered by GP consortia.
