Local authorities (LAs) in England are required to collect and report to the Department the results for all funded children at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in:

  • maintained schools, including academies
  • private, voluntary and independent (PVI) settings with birthdays between 1 April and 31 August who are still in receipt of the free entitlement

Children not receiving government funding at the end of the EYFS are not within the scope of the EYFSP data collection.

Why is the EYFSP data collected?

The Childcare Act 2006 places a duty on local authorities and their partners to improve outcomes for all children and reduce inequalities between them. Fulfilling this duty requires a broad and inclusive strategy, part of which focuses on ensuring that the provision of early learning and care is of the highest quality.

The EYFSP provides information at both national and local authority level on achievement outcomes at the end of the EYFS.

How is the data submitted?

LAs submit the data electronically using COLLECT, the Department's secure IT system.

Log in to COLLECT using Secure Access (SA), which provides a single, secure point of entry to the Department's systems. SA allows users to reset passwords without helpdesk assistance.

Support documents

Please read the EYFSP 2013 guide.

For COLLECT, please read the LA user guide.

Schools can use the input sheet to enter the EYFSP assessment scale summary scores and create a CSV export file for the collection. There are two versions of this file for users with different versions of Excel. A user guide is also available.

In circumstances where a setting is unable to use the input sheet, there is a paper version.  This can be printed out, completed manually, and sent securely to the local authority.

The input sheets and user guide are available below

The following technical documents are available

Other documents will be listed here when they are available.
