Career development and workforce planning

If you are working in, considering a career in health informatics, or are a manager of health informatics staff, you might wish to visit the Health Informatics Career Framework (HICF).

The aim of the HICF is to identify and open up career pathways and opportunities using a consistent and transferable UK-wide approach. The framework, which includes a range of tools, is designed to help:

  • individuals plan their own careers
  • managers to workforce plan
  • strategists to design organisational structures and approaches
  • commissioners to contract appropriate services and training

Health Informatics is about the effective use of data, information, knowledge and technology to support and improve health and health care delivery.

The profession includes a variety of specialist staff working to this end, including; knowledge management, information management, senior managers and directors, ICT, patient admin and health records, clinical informatics and portfolio programme and project managers, as well as trainers/educators.

When you explore the HICF you will find out more about the competences required for health informatics roles at all levels and across these disciplines.

The HICF is a UK wide tool, developed with input from all 4 home countries. It has recently been upgraded and the new version will be available in early 2012. These developments make it even more comprehensive, user friendly and interactive. Find out more by exploring the Health Informatics Career Framework.

Professionalising Health Informatics (PHI)

If you are looking for development opportunities and ideas visit Professionalising Health Informatics (PHI).phi
It is a single point of access, an online 'one-stop shop' for information about health informatics related qualifications, training courses, resources and advice for anyone interested in personal and professional development in health informatics.

PHI is primarily an information filter – a 'signpost' – for health informaticians, human resources managers and those looking to move into informatics job roles whether in or for the NHS.

Rather than duplicate information available elsewhere, PHI signposts you to original sources.

Try out the Learning Web, one of the key resources on PHI, which looks at major areas of personal and professional development under the following main topics:
