Programme-specific clinical and medical directors

Individual programmes have appointed a clinical or medical director, whose experience and skill-base provide in-depth knowledge on that programme. These include:

Choose and Book

Dr Stephen Miller – Medical Director for Choose and Book

Dr Miller has been a practising GP since 1995 and has been using electronic booking since 1999. Dr Miller has been using Choose and Book in his surgery in South East London since it went live in 2005.

Dr Miller was the driving force behind local clinical engagement in Choose and Book and helped south-east London rapidly became one of the highest early users of the service.

In 2002 and 2003, Dr Miller piloted 'Area Wide Electronic Booking' in South East London. The pilot gave patients the choice of three hospitals that could be booked electronically and, as a result of this work, south-east London became a finalist in the 2003 eHealth Awards held in Brussels.

In July 2007, Dr Miller was appointed Choose and Book medical director and has since been working with the national team, clinicians and front-line NHS staff to make Choose and Book the everyday method for referring patients.

Dr Miller is responsible for the Clinical, Implementation and Training/Education teams within the Choose and Book programme and work closely with communications teams.

He continue to work closely with policy colleagues in the Department of Health, especially the Choice Policy team and the team working on choice of Any Qualified Provider.

Dr Erika Denton - Medical Director for PACS

Erica Denton

Dr Erika Denton is the National Clinical Director for Imaging, Department of Health (DH), Consultant Radiologist with a Special Interest in Breast Imaging at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Trust

Since 2005 Erika has been National Clinical Lead, and subsequently National Clinical Director, for Imaging at DH leading a complex programme of work across all aspects of imaging. This has delivered considerable additional capacity for imaging services and marked reduction in waiting times. Her work has included Cancer, Paediatric, Interventional, Cardiac and Forensic imaging.  She has led deployment of PACS systems across the NHS.

Erika was previously Divisional Clinical Director for support services and head of radiology training in Norwich.

Dr James Paton - clinical director for UK Terminology Centre

Dr James Paton

Dr James Paton has been Director of Clinical Informatics at Queens Hospital, Burton-on-Trent since 2002 and in September 2008 was appointed Clinical Director for the UK Terminology Centre (UKTC), an affiliate of the International Healthcare Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO).

The UKTC is hosted by NHS Connecting for Health's Technology Office and was established in 2007 to provide a central point for managing, distributing, supporting and controlling the use of SNOMED CT and related assets throughout the UK.

James has been involved in local and national IT development since 2002, including chairing the Pathology Bounded Code List forum, participating in and evaluating the early national Electronic Health Record pilots and appraising for the Information Standards Board.

Prior to joining NHS CFH James has been Consultant Microbiologist and Medical Director at Queens Hospital and continues his clinical role as Consultant Microbiologist alongside his position with NHS CFH.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

Dr Manpreet Pujara – Clinical Director for the Electronic Prescription Service

Dr Manpreet Pujara is a GP in Rochester, Kent. He trained at Southampton University and became a GP in Carshalton, Surrey and moved to the Thorndike Healthcare Centre in 2002.

As a member of the EPS GP User Group Dr Pujara has been working with the EPS team for over three years, he will continue with his role on this group.

The EPS Clinical Director position is an additional role for Dr Pujara who became a GP National Clinical Lead in January 2008.
