Three projects up for EHI awards

Three projects in three different categories have the opportunity to scoop awards at this year's 'E-Health Insider Awards: Rewarding Excellence in Healthcare IT'. (Published: 01 August 2011)

NHS Choices, NHS Pathways and DH QIPP are the finalists and they will find out if they have won at the awards ceremony in October.

The 'Couch to 5K' initiative, developed and delivered by NHS Choices, has made it to the final stages of the E-Health Insider Awards in the 'Best use of social media in healthcare' category.

Deborah El-Sayed, Programme Director for NHS Choices, said: "Couch to 5K has been a very successful project, which has delivered great benefits to patients whilst supporting the health and well being of the public.

"This project continues to grow and providing the public with a central website where they can find health related information and find supporting tools to motivate them to get fit.

"The Couch to 5K application has been downloaded over 1 million times and we hope it will grow further. It is great to be shortlisted for an award and recognise the hard work people have put into this project to make it a success."

Joining them are the NHS Pathways 'Capacity Management System' programme, who have also been selected as finalist for the 'NHS Pathways and the Directory of Services' project in the 'Most Promising IT for GP-led commissioning' category.

Jackie Shears, Programme Head NHS Pathways Capacity Management System, says: "This is great news. The team are delighted to be finalists for an award.

"NHS Pathways and Directory of Services project has been very successful across ambulance trusts, out-of-hours surgeries and more recently NHS 111 pathfinder sites.

"The programme combines two NHS created systems to offer great potential to provide data to commissioners on the full extent of demand for individual clinical skills, by time of day and post code. The programme is in high demand and we hope it will bring the NHS and patients real benefits to patient care."

Completing a hat-trick of award finalists, the DH QIPP Urgent Care Clinical Dashboard, which is being supported by NHS Bolton and the DH Informatics Directorate, has been shortlisted for 'Outstanding work in IT-enabled change in healthcare' category.

The DH Informatics Directorate is developing the dashboard standards and supporting 'Pioneer' and 'fast follower' NHS teams across the country to implement the dashboard.

David Corbett, Informatics Lead, says: "The dashboard is helping GPs and other clinicians to identify patients registered to their practices who are presenting at unscheduled care settings, and to use this real-time information to improve and more proactively manage and coordinate the delivery of care for patients, particularly for vulnerable patients and those with multiple long-term conditions.

"The dashboard is being well received nationally and locally and we are delighted to have been nominated in this category, and to be recognised for the enthusiasm and hard work put in by the local NHS teams, and the partnership we have developed with the QIPP Urgent and Emergency Care work stream to support the delivery."

The E-Health Insider awards recognise excellence in healthcare IT across organisations and projects in the public and private sector. There are 11 categories including and three projects have been shortlisted for three of these.

The additional category of 'Healthcare IT Champion of the Year' is yet to be judged and is all down to public vote. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 6 October.
