The NHS Institute closed on 31 March 2013. This website is being maintained until the end of June 2013 so that registered users can download documents and view videos (but webinars are no longer available). Once this website is closed you'll be able to see all publicly available content on The National Archives website: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/*/http://institute.nhs.uk.

Please note that from May 1st 2013 the ability to order our hard copy materials will be temporarily suspended as we finalise the closedown of the NHS Institute and complete the transition to NHS Improving Quality (part of NHS England). It will still be possible to download publications until this website closes, which is projected to be at the end of June 2013. It is currently anticipated that many of the materials will be passed onto NHS England and should become available again later this year.

Further messages on its future will be posted here over the coming weeks.

The Productive Community Hospital

The Productive Community Hospital: Releasing time to care™ builds on the success of the Productive Ward. Around 80% of trusts have already signed up to the Productive Ward programme. Against this background, the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has been working with nurses and therapists to develop ways to increase the amount of direct care time given to patients in community hospitals.

The Productive Community Hospital programme is designed to help achieve this by improving the effectiveness, safety and reliability of inpatients, day hospitals and minor injuries units.

Sites that have helped develop and test the programme report that their expectations have been exceeded and that their staff have been empowered and enthused to make challenging changes to the way they work.

Adopting The Productive Community Hospital will enable local providers and commissioners to compare the performance of their local community facilities with that of others, learn from the best and make positive improvements for patients.

Support packages
We have carefully selected two delivery partners to support and guide you through the programme.  These are:

KM&T
Shaping Health International.

All delivery partners involved in the support of The Productive Community Hospital have been comprehensively trained and are supported by a rigorous quality assurance structure.
