NHS Friends and Family Test: guidance on scoring and presenting results published

*14 February 2013 update: Annex A has been amended with correct information in the publication guidance.

Guidance for providers of NHS funded services on calculating and presenting the NHS friends and family test results has been published.  The guidance details how scores will be calculated and how national and local publication should be carried out. It aims to support those who are currently implementing the test.

Read the NHS Friends and Family Test publication guidance*.

Collection of the data for the test needs to be in place at the latest by April 2013 and covers all acute inpatient wards and all type 1 and 2 A&E departments.

From April 2013 all patients will be asked a simple question to identify if they would recommend a particular A&E department or ward to their friends and family. The results of the test will be used to improve the experience of patients by providing timely feedback alongside other sources of patient feedback. It will highlight priority areas for action.

The NHS friends and family test was announced by the Prime Minister on 25 May 2012 and implementation guidance was published 4 October 2012, followed by detailed technical guidance for UNIFY2 published 28 November 2012.
