Quality in the new health system – improving and maintaining quality from April 2013

The National Quality Board (NQB) has published a draft report – Quality in the new health system – maintaining and improving quality from April 2013 – setting out how quality will operate in the new health system.

The report sets out the distinct roles and responsibilities for quality of the different parts of the system (both improving quality and ensuring that the essential standards of quality and safety are maintained). It also details how these distinct roles should work together to share information and take coordinated action, where appropriate, in a culture of open honest transparency and cooperation.

Leadership within provider organisations should ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities in relation to quality – they are ultimately responsible for the quality of care provided to their patients and services users – and that their organisations are able to display the values and behaviours of open and honest cooperation that put patients first.
