Defra is the rural department in government. Most of what we do has a direct bearing on people and businesses in rural England. This includes our work in relation to farming, food, environmental protection, landscape management, water, flooding, and climate change adaptation. We also promote rural interests across government as a whole.

Our priority actions in Defra’s Business Plan for 2012-15 include:

  • Championing rural needs and interests across Government
  • Supporting sustainable economic growth in rural areas
  • Reviewing the direction of forestry and woodland policy in England
  • Reforming key public bodies to transfer more power to people and communities

Rural Statement
