NHS inpatient elective admission events and outpatient referrals and attendances, quarter ending December 2012

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 31^st December 2012 include data for England, Strategic Health Authorities, and NHS Trusts and PCTs.

The latest quarterly statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by the Department of Health were released on 22^nd February 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days in that quarter so figures below have been adjusted for this where appropriate. October to December 2011 had 63 working days and October to December 2012 had 64 working days.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

The number of decisions to admit has increased by 61,839 (2.8%) to 1.46 million and the number of elective admissions from the list has increased by 54,154 (2.7%) to 1.31 million compared to Q3 2011/12.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

The number of GP referrals made has increased by 176,078 (4.7%) to 2.93 million and the number of other referrals made has increased by 105,428 (4.4%) to 1.85 million compared to Q3 2011/12.

First attendances at consultant outpatient clinics have increased by 210,471 (3.4%) to 4.40 million and total attendances increased by 669,107 (3.5%) to 13.77 million compared to Q3 2011/12.

Did not attend (DNA) rates for first outpatients appointment were 8.6%, an increase from 8.4% in Q3 2011/12.

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30th September 2012 include data for England, Strategic Health Authorities, and NHS Trusts and PCTs.

The latest quarterly statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by the Department of Health were released on 30^th November 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority. In line with our revisions policy, we have published revisions covering the periods Q1 2011/12 to Q1 2012/13.

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days in that quarter so figures below have been adjusted for this where appropriate. July to September 2011 had 65 working days and July to September 2012 had 64 working days.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

The number of decisions to admit has increased by 31,000 (3.8%) to 1.42 million and the number of elective admissions from the list has increased by 25,000 (3.6%) to 1.29 million compared to Q2 2011/12.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

The number of GP referrals made has increased by 49,000 (3.3%) to 2.94 million and the number of other referrals made has increased by 87,000 (6.5%) to 1.87 million compared to Q2 2011/12.

First attendances at consultant outpatient clinics have increased by 37,000 (2.4%) to 4.29 million and total attendances increased by 177,000 (2.9%) to 13.37 million compared to Q2 2011/12.

Did not attend (DNA) rates for first outpatients appointment was 8.6% which was the same as for Q2 2011/12.

The latest quarterly national statistics on NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events produced by the Department of Health were released on 31^st August 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 30th June 2012 include data for England, Strategic Health Authorities, and NHS Trusts and PCTs.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

The number of decisions to admit has increased by 42,000 (3.1%) remaining at 1.4 million and the number of elective admissions from the list has increased by 36,000 (3.0%) to 1.3 million compared to Q1 2011/12.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

In Quarter 1 of 2012/13:

The number of GP referrals made has increased by 63,000 (2.2%) remaining at 2.9 million and the number of other referrals made has increased by 112,000 (6.4%) to 1.9 million compared to Q1 2011/12.

First attendances at consultant outpatient clinics have increased by 68,000 (1.7%) to 4.2 million and total attendances increased by 330,000 (2.6%) to 13.2 million compared to Q1 2011/12.

Did not attend (DNA) rates have decreased this quarter compared to the equivalent quarter of 2011/12. This quarter, the percentage of patients who did not attend for their first outpatient attendance is 8.3% which shows a 0.1 percentage point decrease compared to the equivalent quarter of 2011/12.

Quarterly activity data relating to GP and other referrals for an outpatient appointment, the total number of attendances at consultant outpatient clinics; including patients seen for their first appointments as well as those attending for subsequent or follow up appointments. Also, the number of patients who did not attend their outpatient appointment and gave no advance warning or those who arrived too late to be seen. Elective admission events are decisions to admit, patients admitted, patients failed to attend, removals other than admission, patients suspended and patients who have self-deferred. Figures are submitted quarterly on the Quarterly Activity Return (QAR) by NHS Trusts, PCTs and Independent sector providers treating NHS patients.
