This time series shows the number of people recruited to initial teacher training (ITT) courses (broken down by subject specialism for secondary courses) from 1990/91 to 2011/12. These recruitment figures are for postgraduate and undergraduate mainstream ITT courses at universities and other higher education institutions, school-centred initial teacher training and Open University but exclude employment-based routes and the Fast Track Teaching scheme.
This table replicates a time series originally published as part of additional tables to the Department for Education: School workforce in England statistical first release, but retains a longer historical time series. The statistical first release remains the lead publication in this area and should be considered the definitive source for the latest figures.
