Statistics on the school workforce are published as "School Workforce in England (including local authority level figures), January 2008 (revised)" and include data for England covering full time equivalent regular teachers, support staff and teaching assistants, vacancy numbers and rates, sickness absence, ethnicity and pupil: teacher ratios at both national and local authority LA level.

The latest statistics report on the position at January 2008 and update those previously released on 29 April 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • For state funded schools (Local Authority (LA) maintained schools, CTCs and Academies) the full-time equivalent (FTE) number of regular teachers rose by 1,900 (0.4 per cent) to reach 441,200 compared to January 2007.
  • The overall PTR for the LA maintained nursery, primary and secondary sector was 16.9 in January 2008 compared to 17.1 in January 2007.
  • Teacher vacancies in nursery, primary, secondary and special schools went up by 470 to 2,510 in January 2008.
  • There were, on average, 5.4 days sickness absence per teacher that worked in the maintained sector during 2007, an increase of 0.1 compared with 5.3 days in 2006
