Statistics on Children Accommodated in Secure Children's Homes are published as Children Accommodated in Secure Children's Homes at 31 March 2008 and include data from England and Wales. The SFR covers information on places approved and children accommodated by gender, age, length of stay and type of placement.
The latest statistics report at 31 March 2008 and update those previously released on 24 July 2007.
The key points from the latest release are:
- 280 children were accommodated in secure children's homes in England and Wales at 31 March 2008 - 265 in England and 15 in Wales. This represents a fall of 9% on the 2007 total of 305.
- At 31 March 2008, there were 340 approved places in the 19 secure children's homes open in England and Wales.
- 81% of approved places were occupied, a slight increase on the previous year and ending the downward trend of recent years.
