This Statistical First Release provides the earliest information on the overall achievments of young people in GCSE and equivalent examinations in 2004, and progress against the Departments national learning targets. The publication contains provisional national level analyses by school type, gender and subject and provisional LEA level analyses by gender. This information is based on that collated for the 2004 School and College Achievement and Attainment Tables and is currently being checked as part of that exercise. For the first time, this statistical first release will incorporate results not only in GCSE/GNVQ but also in a wide range of other qualifications approved - pre 16 and the new GCSEs in vocational subjects.
