The long-standing Research and Statistics Gateway has been decommissioned. All Departmental Publications are now held on the Department's main web site. Please update your bookmarks, as this site will be closed on 31 March 2013.

Admission Appeals in maintained primary and secondary schools in England
This annual SFR provides information about appeals made by parents against non-admission of their children to their preferred school. The figures relate to the academic year prior to the one in which the SFR is published (so the SFR published in 2012 covered appeals made for the 2010/11 year). They also include appeals made prior to and also during the academic year.

At the moment the figures relate to appeals made to local authority (LA) maintained schools only, including relevant appeals that were made prior to a school converting to academy status. They do not include academies, apart from any appeals made prior to the point of conversion (where appropriate). As the number of academies rapidly increases the relevance of the data without their inclusion is much reduced. It will also not be comparable with previous data published in this SFR series.

Therefore we will not collect admissions appeals data in 2013 (on the 2011/12 academic year), while we work on extending the collection to include academies for 2014 onwards.

Therefore the SFR will not be published for 2013 only. Publication will recommence in 2014 with the data collection extended to cover all academies.

DfE: School Capacity 2011/12
The Statistical First Release 'School Capacity 2011/12' was due to be published on 23 January. However, due to the need to carry out additional quality assurance to the data, the Head of Profession has decided that this Statistical First Release should now be published on 01 March.

Announcement of the Discontinuation of the 'Behaviour in Schools in England' statistical release.
The Department usually publishes a Statistical Release entitled "Behaviour in Schools in England" in April each year. This release covers information on behaviour judgements from Ofsted inspections and shows the latest judgement for each school inspected as at December in the preceding year. However, under new transparency arrangements, Ofsted are now publishing these data on their website and will be doing so each quarter, as follows, December, March, June and September. Each release will show the latest position at the end of the previous quarter. This therefore negates the need for the Department for Education to continue with this publication. The timetable for future releases of official statistics about maintained schools inspections and outcomes can be found in the Schedule for the release of official statistics.

The information previously available in the DfE Statistical Release "Behaviour in Schools in England" can now be found in Table 3 in the Official statistics: Maintained school inspections and outcomes publication (Maintained Key Findings) and underlying data, available via the Ofsted website.

The intention to consider discontinuing this publication was first announced in September 2011 in the DfE Schedule of Publications.

Questions on the above can be directed to Lorraine Watson (020 7340 8080) or Christina Swensson (020 7340 7949).
