The Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Transport (DfT) are to invest £9.5m to encourage and assist UK road-haulage operators to buy and use low carbon medium and heavy-goods vehicles. Heavy-goods vehicles contribute around 20% of the UK’s domestic transport carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions. We aim to encourage the widespread introduction of low carbon vehicles to UK fleets, helping the UK to meet its targets on CO2 reduction and reducing fleet operating costs. We are seeking to help operators establish and run fleets of alternative and dual-fuel heavy-goods vehicles, and electric and hybrid commercial vehicles by partfunding both the difference in capital cost between the traditional vehicles and their low carbon equivalents, and the refuelling/ charging point for use by the trial fleet.
Demonstration trial fleets will be run for two years, during which time usage data will be gathered and analysed by DfT. This competition is open to businesses of any size and we are actively seeking to engage with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as the large operators. Every application must be a collaboration and be led by a vehicle operator. The maximum grant received by a single applicon is not expected to exceed £750k.
The competition opens on 24 April 2012 and the registration deadline is at noon on 13 June 2012. The deadline for applications is at noon on 20 June 2012. A briefing event for potential applicants will be held on 9 May 2012.
