Feasibility

Advancing the industrial application of synthetic biology

The Technology Strategy Board, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) are to invest up to £6.5m to encourage businesses to explore innovative industrial applications of synthetic biology.

This initiative is part of our programme for emerging technologies and industries and highlights the opportunities for industry created by technological advancements in synthetic biology. Projects should aim to demonstrate the feasibility of using this approach in the creation of novel or improved products or processes. Where appropriate, projects may also explore the social science necessary for the industrial advancement of this technology.

Projects must be collaborative and business-led and are open to businesses of any size and research organisations. Up to £6.5m is available to support early stage feasibility demonstrator studies which will be funded at up to 75% of total eligible costs.The maximum project size is up to £500k.

Projects should last between 12 and 18 months. The competition opens on  8 October 2012. The deadline for registration is noon on  14 November 2012 and the deadline for applications is noon on 21 November 2012. A briefing event for potential applicants will be held in London on 15 October 2012.
