Elective care

Elective care is pre-arranged, non-emergency care that includes scheduled operations. It is provided by medical specialists in a hospital or other secondary care setting. Patients are usually referred from a primary care professional such as a GP.

In England, under the NHS Constitution, patients ‘have the right to access services within maximum waiting times, or for the NHS to take all reasonable steps to offer a range of alternative providers if this is not possible’. The Department collects and publishes monthly referral to treatment (RTT) data which are used to monitor NHS waiting times performance against the standards set out in the NHS Operating Framework.
