It also leads work to ensure the Civil Service provides the most effective and efficient support to Government to help it meet its objectives.

The Prime Minister is the head of the UK Government and is ultimately responsible for the policy and decisions of Government.

As head of the UK Government the Prime Minister also oversees the operation of the civil service and Government agencies, appoints members of the Government, and is the principal Government figure in the House of Commons. Prime Minister's Office

Deputy Prime Minister

The Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP

The Deputy Prime Minister, the Lord President of the Council, is the deputy head of Government. In close co-operation with the Prime Minister, he is responsible for the policy and decisions of the Government as a whole, and as co-chair of the Coalition Committee, he is jointly responsible for the functioning of the coalition and the implementation of the Programme for Government.

He also has special responsibility for political and constitutional reform. This includes:

  • Overall policy responsibility for devolution, including the commission on the consequences of devolution for the House of Commons
  • Individual voter registration
  • Party funding reform
  • Royal succession
  • Introducing powers for people to recall their MP
  • Access to elected office, including supporting people with disabilities to become MPs
  • Electoral policy

The Deputy Prime Minister also has policy responsibility for the Electoral Commission, Boundary Commissions for England and Wales and the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, and joint responsibility with the Justice Secretary for the Bill of Rights Commission.
