DH sets out case for national Proton Beam therapy service

The Department of Health has set out its outline plans for the provision of a national Proton Beam therapy service – a specialist form of radiotherapy that is estimated would benefit 1500 patients a year across England.

The report recommends developing Proton Beam therapy centres in London and Manchester, to avoid the current situation where patients have to be sent abroad for treatment, while also allowing for continued development of the technologies involved and addressing workforce and training issues.
